Embark on the journey of Harriet Tubman’s story and The Underground Railroad! Walk in the footsteps of Harriet Tubman, named “Moses of her people.” Harriet was enslaved, escaped, and was a “conductor” of the Underground Railroad. See where she was born, lived, worked, and from where she fled. Visit the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center and follow the Tubman Byway. In Philadelphia see Independence Hall, The Liberty Bell, the African-American Museum, and the Reginald F. Lewis Museum.

ITINERARY

DAY 1: Depart Ft.Lauderdale and/or West Palm Beach for a flight to Baltimore (roundtrip) upon arrival board the motorcoach towards Maryland’s Eastern Shore with a stop in
Washinton DC to visit the Natioal Museum of African American History & Culture.  Upon arrival in Maryland you will check into your hotel for a two night stay  Dinner has been for you in the area this evening.

Day 2: Enjoy breakfast at the hotel, then depart for the Dorechester County Visitor Center in Cambridge to meet your local guide for the a tour of Harriet  Tubman’s Trail and the Undergroud Railroad Sites.  Visit the Harriet Tubman Museum & Education Center, one of the oldest community organizations dedicated to the memory of Harriet Tubman.  Afterwards, tour the Stanley Institute Museum, an 1800s one-room school built and run by the local black community, determined to educate their childern in a segregated school system.  Later, you will visit the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park & Visitor Center, a 10,000 square-foot visitor cener that includes, exhibits and a theatre that tell the story of Harriet Tubman.  Afterwards, you will visit Brodess Farm & Buck Town Store, where Harriet Tubman’s enslaver lived. Return to the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Cener to enjoy a boxed lunch under the Pavilion.  Later in the afternoon, you will visit the Leverton House where refugees from slavery, found sanctuary.  Jacob & Hannah Leverton fed and gave direction from this site.  Continue to Webb Cabin, where a free African American farmer built a hand hewn log home in 1852.  After your visit ride through Jonestown where Jenkins Jones established a community of free African Americans during the antebellum years. Continue to Mt.Pleasant Cemetery, site of the orginal Mt. Pleasant Methodist Episcopal Church, an African American church community established in 1849 when local Quakers sold this land to free blacks so they could build their own church.  The congregation later moved to the town of Preston where they still meet for services.  The cemetery is still used by the church.  Your last stop will be at Linchester Mill, a place where Harriet Tubman would have passed through and where she possible met Jacob and Hannah Leverton.  Another delicious dinner has been arranged for you this evening.

Day 3: After breakfast at the hotel, check out, and travel along the Tubman Byway to Philadephia.  The driving tour is for 125 miles through the beautiful landscapes and waterscapes of Maryland’s Eastern Shore and continues for 98 miles through Delaware before ending in Philadelphia.  There are 45 amazing sites along the byway that you will visit or drive by.  You will also stop for lunch on your own before arriving at your hotel to check in and freshen up before departing for dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 4:  Following breakfast at the hotel, check out and meet your local guide to afor a visit to William Still’s Last Residence, where Harriet Tubman and others found shelter, food, clothing, transportation and money for the passage north provided by the Philadelphia Vigilance Committee. William Still was a wealthy coal merchant and Underground Railroad agent who help slaves escape and keep records so relatives could find them later.  He also founded the first black YMCA.  You will later visit Independence Hall and see the Liberty Bell (time permitting) Enjoy the guided tour of the African American Museum in Philadelphia.  (AAMP), the first instution funded and built by a major municipality to preserve, interpret and exhibit the heritage of Africian Americans.  Enjoy lunch on your own at the Reading Terminal Marketplace, a famous indoor farmer’s market with diverse meal options and merchandise.  Later in the afternoon you will travel to Baltimore, Maryland where dinner will be at Phillips Seafood Restaurant.  Aferwards, check into your hotel for a restful night.

Day 5: Enjoy Breakfast, then check out and depart for a visit to the National Great Blacks in Was Museum which houses over 150 wax figures of famous African Americans such as Dr. Maritn Luther King, jr.  Rosa Parks, and President Barack Obama.  Later visit the Reginal F. Lewis Museum, which focuses on over 400 years of history in its permanent collection.  Journey through Maryland’s African American history in the areas of indutry, politics, sports and leisure, the arts, education and the military.  Lunch is on your own, near Inner harbor after which yo will head for the airport for the return flight home.
